19th-23rd April 2022

The theme of our Festival to be held in April 2022 is: “UNSUNG HEROES IN 2020”

He aha te mea nui o te ao. He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.
“What is the most important thing in the world? It is people, it is people, it is people.”

2020 was an ‘unprecedented times’ for our country and globally. Lockdowns; face masks; changes to employment, have affected us all and has brought out the best in many of us from kindness to networking within our community.

Katikati Open Air Art would like to celebrate and acknowledge the individuals in our community who gave outstanding service to those isolated and in need. Someone who has done great deeds but received little or no recognition for them.

In a move from our normal mural contest each artist will receive a photo of one of our chosen unsung heroes to paint.
All the portraits will then be placed together to form one large mural to be installed in our town as a reminder of this challenging time in modern history.

Due to Covid -19 restrictions and uncertainty, Katikati Open Air Art have decided to cancel part two of the Katikati Festival of Arts that was to be held in April.

The New Zealand Mural Contest is to still go ahead, and planning is well underway to allow this to be held, but with a twist.

For the first time in the Festival’s 17 year history, the 2022 version will be a virtual competition, with artists from around New Zealand and in Australia. They will remain in their home bubble studios and the public will be able to follow their progress online.

Details for the concept is developing and the organisers will soon introduce artists and their portrait subjects, along with information about how to watch them.
